Being Overweight - Page 2
Obesity is associated with a large number of serious diseases:
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Cardiovascular Disease
  • Cancers (e.g. colon, gall bladder, kidney, prostate, breast)
  • Angina
  • Gall bladder disease
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Stroke
But it can be confusing, where does being overweight end and obesity start? The World Health Organisation issues guidelines which set out what is considered to be normal weight, overweight and obesity. These guidelines are based upon the Body Mass Index (BMI) which is the ratio between height and weight and claims to reflect the proportion of fat to muscle and other tissues. They have been designed to help us as individuals assess whether we are a healthy weight or whether we need to take action to lose excess body fat.
