Food Labels - Ingredients
With today's busy lifestyles many of us rely on convenience and processed foods, but if you are trying to manage your weight learning to read and understand food labels is very important. Sometimes reading food labels can be easy to do and the label will clearly state that a food contains milk, egg, sugar etc. Sometimes however it can be more challenging as labels can have different names for the same ingredients or use an ingredient with a less familiar name. For example:
. Sodium (sodium chloride) and salt are the same
. Milk protein might be called casein
. Egg white might be called albumen
. Peanut might be called satay
As a quick guide ingredients are always listed in descending order of weight. So the main ingredients in a product come first. Look for where fat and sugar appear on the list. The higher they are on the list the higher they are in fat and sugar.
