A History Of Diets - Chronology of Dieting - The Year 1918
Dr Lulu Hunt Peters published her book Diet and Health which introduced the world to the concept of counting calories. Addressing herself mainly to women she encouraged readers to think of calories as a unit of measurement. She wrote "Hereafter you are going to eat 100 calories of bread, not a slice of bread." Dr Peters recommended a daily limit of 1200 calories. She also promoted what she called the 'scientific principle' that calories control equalled weight control and therefore people who were unable to control their weight simply had no discipline or self control.
